The UK and EU:
Sustainability Landscape

  • UK Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) launches in 2027 – glass is excluded; aluminium is included.
  • EU PPWR: All packaging must be recyclable by design by 2030. Recycled content and design for reuse is also important.
  • Energy and Recycling Advantage: Recycled aluminium uses just 5% of the energy required to produce virgin aluminium – and in the UK, over 80% of aluminium packaging is currently recycled.
  • UK Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): From 2025–2026, producers must report and pay fees based on packaging recyclability. Aluminium, being widely and easily recycled, can help reduce EPR fees for large producers – especially as “eco-modulation” kicks in from 2026, penalising harder-to-recycle formats.

Brands Leading the Way

More and more UK beverage brands are embracing aluminium packaging as a way to reduce environmental impact, improve portability, and boost shelf appeal. These forward-thinking companies are setting the pace for a sustainable packaging future:

Aldi UK

Launched aluminium wine bottles in 2025 – reducing transport emissions and winning sustainability awards.

Are using aluminium for RTDs and travel retail spirits.

Still and sparkling water packaged in 100% recycled aluminium bottles, promoting true circularity.

Switched to aluminium to reduce environmental impact and enhance visual impact in the craft spirits market.

Launched their craft gin range in 100% recycled aluminium bottles. Changing from glass to aluminium cut their packaging’s carbon footprint by 91%.
