Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) has become a staple material in packaging thanks to its durability, clarity, and efficiency. But beyond its performance, PET is also the most recycled plastic in Europe – and for good reason. Here’s why PET continues to lead the way in recyclability and sustainability.
1. A Smart Chemical Structure
PET is a thermoplastic polyester made from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Its molecular structure provides an ideal balance of rigidity and flexibility, making it suitable for everything from bottles and jars to textile fibres.
2. Durable, Safe, and Visually Appealing
PET packaging offers excellent barrier properties, helping to keep contents fresh and uncontaminated. Its glass-like clarity also enhances shelf appeal, making it a popular choice for personal care, food, beverage, and health care packaging.
3. Energy-Efficient Recycling
PET is particularly easy to recycle. Its relatively low melting point makes the recycling process less energy-intensive. PET can be broken down, purified, and repolymerised multiple times -supporting closed-loop recycling and reducing waste.
4. High Market Demand for Recycled PET (PCR PET)
Because PET can be recycled so effectively, and due to the changing regulatory landscape, there’s strong demand from brands seeking Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) PET to meet sustainability targets and reduce their reliance on virgin plastic. This demand further drives investment in recycling infrastructure.
5. Regulatory Alignment: UK Plastic Packaging Tax & PPWR
In the UK, the Plastic Packaging Tax applies to any plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content, incentivising manufacturers to integrate PCR materials.
Meanwhile, the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is pushing for higher recyclability and the use of recycled content across the packaging industry – at least 30% PCR content by 2030, with an increase to 50% by 2040. PET’s recyclability makes it a clear front-runner for meeting these evolving standards.
6. Strong Infrastructure Across Europe
Deposit-return schemes and proactive recycling policies across Europe help keep PET bottles out of landfill and in circulation. PET’s high recyclability and established recovery systems are a key reason why it remains the top recycled plastic in the EU.
7. Environmental Gains
Switching to PCR PET significantly reduces carbon emissions and helps conserve resources. It also reduces landfill waste and supports a more circular economy – a win for both brands and the planet.
