Tethered Caps: EU Regulation Takes Effect July 2024

From 3 July 2024, a major change will reshape the beverage packaging industry across Europe. Under the European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD), all beverage bottles up to 3 litres in volume must have tethered caps – closures that remain attached to the bottle even after opening. This regulation aims to significantly reduce plastic litter and improve recycling efficiency.

Why Are Tethered Caps Now Mandatory?

Plastic caps and lids are among the top polluting items found on European beaches. Often detached from bottles and too small to be efficiently recycled, they contribute to widespread environmental damage. Tethered caps ensure that the cap stays with the bottle throughout its lifecycle, increasing the chances of the entire unit being correctly recycled.

What About the UK?

While the UK is not bound by EU law post-Brexit, the requirement for tethered closures introduces a new challenge for UK-based companies trading in the EU. Brands operating across borders must now review their packaging specifications to ensure compliance with this legislation – even if no similar regulation currently exists in the UK.
